The veterinary examination included a comprehensive evaluation of the following systems and structures:
- Eyes: assessment of the optic nerve, optic disc, lens, cornea, iris, pupils, pupillary light reflex, blink reflex, and menace response to evaluate ocular and neurological function.
- Eyelids and Trachea: examined for normal structure and function.
- Ears: evaluated for overall health and abnormalities.
- Mucous Membranes and Oral Cavity: inspection of the throat, tongue, bite alignment, dental development and malformations, and evaluation for cleft palate.
- Cardiopulmonary System: heart and lungs auscultated and assessed for normal function.
- Temperature and Rectal Examination: rectal temperature was obtained, and the rectal area was examined for abnormalities. Anal glands were externally assessed for swelling, discomfort, impaction, or other abnormalities.
- Skin and Coat: examined for coat quality, irritation, lumps, bumps, rashes, lesions, fleas, ticks, other external parasites, and additional dermatologic abnormalities.
- Lymph Nodes and Thyroid Gland: lymph nodes and throat were palpated and evaluated for enlargement, swelling, pain, or irregularities, including assessment around the ears, armpits (axillary region), groin (inguinal region), and behind the knees (popliteal region). The thyroid gland was also palpated and evaluated.
- Musculoskeletal and Orthopedic Assessment: evaluation of bones, joints, posture, gait, limb positioning, spine alignment, and overall movement. The examination included observation for lameness, luxation, joint laxity appropriate for age, and joint crepitus/cracking.
- Feet, Nails, and Tail: assessed for proper structure, alignment, strength, mobility, and any deformities or abnormalities.
- Neurological and Circulatory Assessment: femoral pulses were checked and confirmed to be synchronized with the heartbeat. Neurological reflexes and responses were also evaluated.
- Abdomen and Nose: examined for normal findings and abnormalities, including evaluation of patent nostrils and normal nasal airflow.
- Reproductive Examination: included examination of the external genitalia and male and female reproductive organs, including evaluation of the testicles, penis, prepuce, vulva, and surrounding tissues, as appropriate.
- General Health Assessment: included body condition scoring (BCS 1–9 scale), weight evaluation, hydration status, parasite screening, anal gland assessment, and behavioral/temperament observations. Your puppy received a Body Condition Score of 5/9, which is considered ideal. On the BCS scale, 1/9 indicates an emaciated condition, while 9/9 indicates severe or gross obesity.
